Its eyes, short blackish ears and nostrils are located high on its head so they can see and breathe while swimming. They are almost invisible when gliding across the surface of the water.
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world. They are very good swimmers and live near water, along lakes or rivers. Like the hippopotamus, the capybara is a semi-aquatic mammal. They feed in the water and they'll take to water to escape threats. Reproduction also takes place in water.

Capybaras live in groups of 20 individuals. It is not unusual for the young of different ages to be entrusted to one of the adults, male or female. This "kindergarten" allows parents to bathe, feed or coat themselves with mud without risking their offspring. The females may let any of the group's offspring suckle.
